Learning can, and should, be fun. Incorporating some fun into your learning will not only improve your child’s engagement, it’ll ease some of the inevitable stress that comes from assuming the role of you child’s educator. Have fun with this experience. One of the best ways to teach our youngest learners is with games! You can play games to learn to read. You can play games to learn math. You can do science experiments and watch as they learn something new while having fun. You can act out historical events and figures. Have fun with it!
Do you need some ideas? Search your memory bank for your fondest memories of fun educational experiences. Ask others for their fondest memories. What made those educational experiences fun? Did you walk away from that educational experience with a strong memory of what you were being taught?
In my own experience, we have had the most fun when I can be silly and not take myself too seriously in our learning process. I use different voices when I read. I play games whenever I can. I integrate movies into our comparative studying of books we have read. We use paint. We bake often and use the experience to work on math skills. We use the internet to research science experiments that we can usually conduct with simple household materials. We use music and learn outside as often as possible. We garden. We walk in nature. We certainly have our challenging days getting through the required curriculum but those days serve as a reminder that we are overdue for some fun.
